June 4, 2009 - “Supernatural” Stars Might Be Back For Six

The stars of the CW’s series Supernatural have given fans of the show reason to believe that the next season — the series’ fifth — may not be its last. Speaking at the recent Asylum 3 convention in Birmingham, England, star Jensen Ackles stated that he and co-star Jared Padalecki will return for a sixth season if the network orders one.
“I have to. I have a six-year contract,” he told a reporter from the UK newspaper The Coventry Telegraph.

Although the CW recently confirmed Supernatural’s slot in its schedule for the next fall/winter television season, there has been speculation among television pundits and fans of the horror show that it may be exorcised from the network’s schedule thereafter. That speculation has been fueled by creator Eric Kripke’s claim that he had a five-year plan for the show.

Ackles comments, though, indicate that the network planned for a sixth season. Fans may therefore feel optimistic that Supernatural’s Winchester brothers will have at least one more year of monster hunting after the upcoming one. Ackles said, however, that the stars won’t know until early next year whether a Season Six will happen.

“We find out around January time if the show is going to be picked up again for another season.” Ackles said.

Ackles also expressed a note of caution regarding the show’s future. “Kripke does only have a five-year contract for Supernatural and the studio doesn’t have to carry it on for six seasons.”

Co-star Padalecki meanwhile, sounded optimistic. “My best guess is that Supernatural will go beyond season five,”  he said. Nonetheless, he acknowledged that it would be better to go out on top rather than risk loosing viewers like another show that initially built a dedicated audience.

“I was a huge fan of Lost—I’d never seen a drama series that I loved so much,” said Padalecki. “But as I continued to watch it, it started to get complicated for the sake of being complicated. It could have been so complete, it could have just answered the questions that it asked as opposed to saying ‘let’s blow some stuff up and we’ll figure it out later’. I don’t want that to happen. If there’s still a story to tell and still something for me to bring to the show as Sam Winchester, then absolutely.”

April 9, 2009 - Supernatural: Sexy, Scary, Over?

In the intense universe of fandom surrounding Supernatural — the CW series that follows the chisel-jawed Winchester brothers as they drive around the country snuffing out demons — there are ”Sam girls” and ”Dean girls.” Websites chronicle every scrap of minutiae (including the fellas’ sweet ride, a ‘67 Chevy Impala), and bloggers dig around casting directors’ sites looking for snippets of scenes to post online (they’ve even managed to spoil entire scripts). There’s also a unique and very creepy subset of romantic fan fiction dedicated to siblings Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) called ”Wincest” — the less said about it the better. One creative fan actually showed up on set in an orange vest, pretending to be a production assistant. ”They gave her a walkie-talkie!” recalls Ackles. ”She worked the entire day there until somebody finally figured it out. Obviously now they’ve stepped up the protocol.” Meaning, the stars have a bodyguard when they’re working. Says Padalecki, ”I guess the network or the studio said, ‘We [only] have two guys on this show. We’d better protect them.”’

April 4, 2009 - Fifth Season The Last For Supernatural?

“Smallville” is getting a ninth season, but don’t expect “Supernatural” to go that far.

Eric Kripke doesn’t care what the ratings are on The CW … after the fifth season, he’s done.

“Despite what the network and studio may or may not want, I don’t have more than five seasons of a story,” Kripke told Entertainment Weekly, according to the New York Post. “I would be willing to make sure there are enough villains and heroes around to continue a new story, but there’s no way I’m doing Season 6.”

The show is concluding its fourth season, and The CW has already enthusiastically renewed it for a fifth season. But even if Kripke does leave, it doesn’t necessarily mean the end of “Supernatural.” When Al Gough and Miles Millar left “Smallville,” The CW renewed the show anyway, and ratings and critical acclaim has remained strong.

However, Kripke might not be alone in how many seasons the show should last.

“We don’t live at home,” said Jensen Ackles, one of the stars of the show, about how “Supernatural” is shot in Vancouver, British Columbia. “We don’t sleep in our own beds. Our families aren’t here. Our friends aren’t here. Our girlfriends aren’t here. To do it for another five years, I don’t know if I could handle it.”

Jared Padalecki, the other half of the Winchester Brothers, agrees … but with slightly different reasons.

“I don’t want to be cheese, and here’s Sam and Dean at age 50 sitting in wheelchairs,” Padalecki said. “I’d rather leave [fans] wanting more than get to the point where they boo you off stage.”

“Supernatural” airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on The CW.
